Ken graduated from Conestoga Valley Senior High School in 1974 where he ran cross country and track, lettering in neither. He did, however, enjoy Spanish, Science (especially Physics), Math and both Band (clarinet) and Chorus (Bass II). Ken was an Eagle Scout with Boy Scout Troop 83 and had been tapped for Order of the Arrow. He graduated from the Pennsylvania State University with a BS in Science and a commission as an officer in the US Navy via the NROTC program in 1978. As an “enswine of the line” he attended Submarine School at the New London Submarine Base in Groton, Connecticut and Guided Missile School in Dam Neck, Virginia before serving onboard the USS George C. Marshall (SSBN 654 Blue) as an Asst. Weapons Officer. In 1981, he met his future spouse, Loretta Antonelli of Norwich, CT. As a Lieutenant, Ken served as the Operations Control Center Officer for Commander, Naval Forces, Caribbean. In 1983, Ken left active service but continued in the reserves most notably as Commanding Officer of a Mobile Mine Assembly Group detachment in Plainville, CT. Ken eventually began a career in computer programming working both as a consultant and as an employee at various Hartford area companies. Ken Whiting and Loretta (Antonelli) Whiting were married on July 9, 1983 in Norwich and resided there and then in Vernon before settling in Windsor where they raised their son John and socialized six German Shepherd Dogs for the Fidelco Guide Dog Foundation. Ken enjoyed skiing and camping in his youth but in later years focused on Sudoku puzzles and science fiction as well as continued interest in the Navy, GSDs and serving as a Roman Catholic Extraordinary Minister of the Eucharist.
